Last week, approximately 72,000 migrants arrived at Ceuta, a small Spanish enclave in North Africa, following online rumors from Morocco. Reports indicate that about 142 migrants lost their lives at the border, mainly due to drowning or stampedes. Most of the migrants departed within a couple of days, largely of their own volition.
The incident has sparked a political crisis for the pro-immigration Spanish government amidst a growing anti-immigration sentiment in the European Union, emphasizing border security. Questions persist regarding the circumstances that led to the mass influx and who bears responsibility for the situation.
