Young individuals are set to benefit from enhanced access to apprenticeships in retail and dining establishments as part of a substantial multi-million-pound initiative aimed at addressing youth unemployment. Keir Starmer will unveil a significant £725 million funding package on Monday to facilitate 50,000 youths in securing apprenticeship placements.

The initiative entails full government sponsorship of apprenticeships for individuals under 25 in small and medium-sized enterprises. It will also incorporate £140 million for a trial program where local mayors can link young people, especially those not engaged in education or employment, with numerous apprenticeship opportunities at nearby businesses.

Furthermore, there will be increased support for a fresh wave of foundation apprenticeships in fields like retail and hospitality. Additionally, new concise courses focusing on cutting-edge areas such as AI, engineering, and digital skills will commence rollout from April 2026.

The government’s objective is to reverse the declining trend in young people commencing apprenticeships, which has decreased by nearly 40% over the past decade. The Prime Minister has pledged to elevate apprenticeships to the same status as university degrees. Starmer emphasized the need to shift the perception of apprenticeships and elevate them to equal standing with higher education.

This development follows the announcement of an £820 million initiative to assist young individuals receiving benefits in accessing job opportunities. The funding includes provisions for training and practical experience in construction, hospitality, and health and social care for 350,000 young Universal Credit recipients.

DWP Secretary Pat McFadden expressed that this financial injection is an investment in both the youth’s prospects and the nation’s future by establishing genuine pathways to quality employment. Moreover, the government is anticipated to unveil its national youth strategy this week.

In an interview with BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, McFadden highlighted the inadequacies young people face in areas like housing and employment, emphasizing the necessity for a better deal for them and a government that believes in their potential.
