Liz Kendall criticized Nigel Farage’s disparaging remarks about hiring employees from diverse backgrounds as she introduced a new initiative focused on women in the tech industry.

The Secretary of Technology emphasized the profound impact of technology on society and advocated for equal opportunities for women in tech, stressing the importance of providing them with the same chances and choices as men.

During the launch of the women in tech taskforce at the Labour Party’s annual conference, Ms. Kendall emphasized the need to shift the industry’s focus from Silicon Valley’s Tech Bros to the Tech Sisters in the UK. The taskforce aims to identify and eliminate obstacles hindering education, training, and career advancement for women in tech.

The inaugural meeting of the taskforce, held in London at the British Science Association, brought together prominent figures from the industry, including executives from Revolut, the Royal Academy of Engineering, and BT Group.

Statistics reveal a significant gender gap in computer science degrees, with men outnumbering women four to one. Women are less likely to enter the tech field, remain in it, or progress to leadership roles, leading to an annual economic loss of £2–£3.5 billion due to women leaving the sector.

Ms. Kendall dismissed criticism of diversity programs, particularly from Nigel Farage, and expressed her commitment to making the tech industry more inclusive. She emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, minority communities, and individuals with disabilities to access future job prospects.

Regarding Mr. Farage’s comments, Ms. Kendall labeled them as “ignorant” and “unambitious,” highlighting the necessity of empowering individuals with equal opportunities and choices. She stressed the economic impact of women exiting the tech sector annually, emphasizing the loss of talent and financial resources.

The Cabinet minister underscored the significance of a diverse workforce in enhancing the quality of technology, particularly in healthcare. Ms. Kendall emphasized the importance of developing tech solutions that reflect the diverse experiences of individuals to improve early detection, prevention, and treatment of conditions like heart attacks and strokes.

She emphasized that technology, developed by individuals from diverse backgrounds, will be more effective in transforming various aspects of work, learning, and daily life. Ms. Kendall reiterated the importance of creating opportunities for women to access future job opportunities while ensuring that technology caters to the needs of women.

Overall, Ms. Kendall’s initiative aims to address the gender disparity in the tech industry, promote diversity, and harness the potential of a more inclusive workforce for the advancement of technology and society.
