Ukraine conducted a targeted explosion on a high-rise building in Chechnya, believed to be aimed at a clandestine spy headquarters. Concurrently, Russian drones attacked a residential house in central Ukraine, resulting in the tragic death of a 12-year-old boy, while Ukrainian forces launched strikes on a Russian port and an oil refinery.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine reiterated accusations against Russian President Vladimir Putin for delaying peace negotiations. The drone strike in Grozny targeted a crucial skyscraper, causing a significant explosion and severe damage to multiple floors.
The high-rise is adjacent to the Chechnyan FSB HQ, the local equivalent of the Russian intelligence service, potentially making it the primary objective. However, it could also have been an effort to strike the nearby residence of regional leader and warlord Ramzan Kadyrov.
Images shared on Telegram news channels depicted shattered windows and burnt sections on various floors of the 28-story Business Center Grozny-City tower. This tower, located around 2,700 feet from Kadyrov’s residence in central Grozny, witnessed the aftermath of the explosion.
To manage the situation, civil aviation authorities imposed temporary flight restrictions at Grozny airports and several neighboring cities early Friday. These developments could pose a challenge for President Putin, who recently received a warm welcome from Prime Minister Modi in Delhi, strengthening the India-Russia relationship amid US pressure on trade tariffs.
The attack marks a continuation of Ukrainian incursions into Chechnya, supporting the ongoing Russian invasion. Ukrainian drones also struck Gudermes, targeting a site utilized by the Akhmat Regiment, a Chechen-dominated unit of Russia’s National Guard under the command of Ramzan Kadyrov.
While engaging in talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a state visit, Putin faces a crucial moment at the 23rd Russia-India Summit, as global pressure mounts for a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. This summit tests India’s diplomatic balancing act between Moscow and Washington amidst the protracted war in Ukraine.
President Zelensky expressed the Ukrainian delegation’s interest in understanding the outcomes of talks between the US and Russia at the Kremlin. Notably, previous attempts to break the deadlock and achieve peace in Ukraine have not yielded results, prolonging the conflict.
Zelensky and his European allies have consistently criticized Putin for stalling peace negotiations while the Russian military continues its offensive. Amid these tensions, Yuri Ushakov, a Kremlin foreign affairs adviser, echoed Putin’s criticism of Europe’s stance on the peace talks, highlighting the challenges in reaching a settlement.
The conflict escalated further as a Russian drone attack destroyed a house in Ukraine’s central Dnipropetrovsk region, resulting in casualties. The Ukrainian air force reported numerous drone attacks by Russia, including an assault on a port in Russia’s Krasnodar region near the Ukrainian border.
