A new government initiative has been launched to benefit millions of drivers by enabling them to save money on fuel purchases. The scheme requires all of the 8,350 fuel stations nationwide to promptly notify price changes for petrol and diesel, which will then be accessible through various third-party websites and apps for easy comparison by drivers.

The goal is to eventually provide real-time updates, offering drivers increased opportunities to save money, potentially amounting to significant savings over time. Previously, only 65% of UK fuel stations were covered by an interim scheme overseen by the Competition and Markets Authority.

Under the newly introduced ‘Fuel Finder’ program, all petrol stations will be required to adhere to strict regulations regarding price information disclosure. Failure to comply could result in penalties such as receiving a compliance notice or facing fines up to 1% of their global annual revenue.

This initiative comes in response to concerns that motorists have been paying excessive prices at the pump. Even a small difference in prices, such as 5p per liter between stations, could save the average driver £2.75 per refueling. Edmund King, the president of the AA motoring group, emphasized the importance of empowering consumers to find better fuel prices easily and effectively.

Industry experts like Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, see this as a positive step towards fostering competition among retailers and ultimately providing drivers with better value at fuel stations. With the national average price for unleaded at 132.1p per liter and diesel at 141.2p, the hope is that this initiative will lead to more competitive fuel prices across the UK, benefiting drivers nationwide.
