A powerful 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck Japan, triggering a tsunami alert and evacuations in certain regions of the country. The seismic event occurred off the coast of Aomori Prefecture on Thursday, leading to observed ‘sea level fluctuations.’ The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for the central Pacific coastline of Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, and Miyagi Prefectures.

This event followed an earlier megaquake warning in Japan, which was prompted by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake recorded on Monday, raising concerns of potential catastrophic consequences. The Japan Meteorological Agency swiftly issued a tsunami advisory after the 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit the Aomori Prefecture coast earlier today. The advisory, covering the Pacific coast of Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, and Miyagi Prefectures, has since been lifted.

Residents were cautioned about possible one-meter high tsunami waves hitting the coast in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Japanese citizens had been advised post-Monday’s quake to prepare emergency supplies, including food, water, and medication for extended periods, along with sturdy shoes and protective headgear for quick evacuation needs.

Authorities also recommended safety measures such as families sleeping together in one room with elderly or vulnerable members for swift evacuation in emergencies. Citizens were encouraged to wear day clothes at night for faster evacuation readiness.

Reports indicate no immediate clarity on damage or injuries following the earthquake. An advisory denotes a lower level of caution compared to a warning. The recent quake, occurring after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake earlier in the week, caused injuries, minor damages, and a coastal tsunami in Pacific communities.

According to reports, tsunami waves of 0.2 meters affected several areas in Aomori Prefecture and along the Hokkaido coast in Japan. An evacuation directive has been given for 2,835 residences, impacting 6,138 individuals in Ofunato, Iwate, Japan.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi issued a warning to the nation to stay prepared and evacuate promptly upon sensing any tremors. She emphasized the heightened risk of a significant earthquake along the Hokkaido to Sanriku offshore region, leading to the issuance of an advisory.

No anomalies were reported at the Higashidori or Onagawa nuclear power plants post-earthquake. Despite the observed ‘sea level fluctuations,’ there are no concerns regarding damage. No tsunami threats are expected for the western coasts of the US and Canada.

A one-meter high tsunami wave is projected to impact the Pacific coast regions of Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, and Miyagi prefectures in Japan. The earthquake necessitated the evacuation of thousands of individuals, with a related evacuation order affecting 2,835 residences in Ofunato, Iwate, Japan.
