A former adviser of the Labour Party has initiated legal proceedings against the administration of Donald Trump following his inclusion in a group of five Europeans subjected to visa sanctions. Imran Ahmed, an associate of Keir Starmer’s key adviser, Morgan McSweeney, was singled out by the U.S. for his involvement with the Centre of Countering Digital Hate (CCDH). The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, accused Mr. Ahmed of leading efforts to influence American platforms to take action against viewpoints they oppose, which led to his exclusion from entering the U.S.

In response, Mr. Ahmed has filed a lawsuit against Marco Rubio, Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, alleging an unconstitutional scheme to detain and expel him from the United States. He emphasized his commitment to safeguarding children from the perils of unregulated social media and artificial intelligence, as well as combating online antisemitism. Despite being a resident of the U.S. with American family members, he is fighting against his unjust removal from his home country instead of celebrating Christmas with his loved ones.

The former Labour Party consultant from Manchester serves as the CEO of CCDH, an organization previously associated with Mr. McSweeney until his resignation with Mr. Starmer’s leadership appointment in April 2020. The legal filing asserts that Mr. Ahmed, a lawful permanent resident residing in the U.S. with his American wife and child, is facing repercussions due to CCDH’s research on social media company policies, including those of Elon Musk’s platforms. The lawsuit argues that there are no valid grounds for Mr. Ahmed’s detention and highlights the unconstitutional nature of the potential arrest.

Representing Mr. Ahmed, Roberta Kaplan expressed dismay at the situation, emphasizing the injustice of him being compelled to defend against deportation during the holiday season rather than spending time with his family. A U.S. District Judge issued a temporary restraining order shortly after midnight, preventing Mr. Ahmed’s arrest or detention.

Mr. Ahmed previously disclosed that the concept behind CCDH emerged during his tenure as an adviser to Labour MP Hilary Benn. Motivated by the surge of antisemitism within the UK left and the tragic killing of his colleague Jo Cox MP by a white supremacist, he founded the organization. Another individual, Clare Melford, who manages the Global Disinformation Index (GDI) from the UK, was also among the Europeans facing U.S. visa sanctions. A spokesperson for GDI criticized the sanctions as an authoritarian attack on free speech and an act of government censorship.
