UK smartphone users are being warned about a concerning new text message circulating on devices. This latest wave of fraudulent messages renews the infamous “Hi Mum” scam, which has already resulted in substantial financial losses for victims.

The scam starts with a seemingly innocent text supposedly from a family member using a different phone number, leveraging current seasonal conditions to appear timely and legitimate. The deceptive message typically conveys urgency, stating, “Hi Mum, I’m feeling overwhelmed by the heat. Please reach out to me on my new number – it’s urgent.”

Upon responding, the scammer masquerades as a distressed relative and eventually requests money under false pretenses, often claiming an emergency situation. According to Report Fraud, these scams exploit parents’ natural instincts to assist their children, instilling panic and prompting swift action without due diligence.

If you receive such a message, refrain from replying and verify your loved one’s safety using their established contact details. Report any suspicious texts promptly to safeguard others.

In case of receiving a dubious message:

– Refrain from responding.
– Contact your family member through their usual phone number.
– Forward the suspicious text to 7726, the UK’s spam reporting service.

Although the scam may appear obvious in hindsight, its emotional manipulation has ensnared numerous victims, particularly those less familiar with technology. The messages craft compelling narratives that coerce individuals into transferring money without verifying the legitimacy of the request.

The financial impact of these scams is significant, with Action Fraud disclosing that over £220,000 was lost to “Hi Mum” fraud between 2023 and 2025 in the UK. It is advisable to approach unexpected messages purporting to be from family members cautiously, always confirming their identity through trusted channels before taking any action.
