A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. Smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing big brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value.
The study highlights that internet connection issues, such as frequent dropouts, are widespread among consumers, along with slow download speeds and service disruptions. An alarming 91% of broadband users reported facing problems with their service in the past year, indicating a lack of trouble-free connections for most households.
Sky, one of the leading providers, faced criticism for frequent dropouts affecting 38% of its customers, although these were promptly resolved. Virgin Media also received negative feedback, with 30% of users experiencing regular connection dropouts despite paying premium prices. Additionally, a quarter of Virgin customers expressed dissatisfaction with slow download speeds.
Customers of Sky voiced discontent with slow broadband speeds, with nearly one in three reporting inadequate performance. Other underperforming providers include TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service, which received low ratings from users.
On the other hand, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic received praise for their reliability and customer satisfaction. Among larger providers, Plusnet stood out for surpassing competitors like Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.
This aligns with previous Which? research showing that smaller broadband companies consistently outperform major providers in terms of reliability, customer service, and value for money. Which? recommends households to explore alternative providers in their area and switch if unsatisfied with their current service, suggesting the use of Ofcom’s broadband checker for network availability.
The report’s findings emphasize the importance of good-quality broadband as an essential service, urging consumers to leverage competitive deals and switch providers if needed. In response, Virgin Media highlighted its ongoing investments to enhance services, citing positive feedback from official data and independent rankings.
