Plant enthusiast Klaus Koehler made a unique discovery while exploring Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park near Iqaluit in July. He came across a seldom-seen species in the Arctic, a finding that could signal implications for the presence of more invasive species in northern regions as the climate undergoes warming.

Koehler came upon a brownish weed-like plant known as bladderwort when he reached into a pond. Despite its inconspicuous appearance to the untrained eye, Koehler recognized the plant for what it was. The carnivorous bladderwort is adorned with small black bladders containing nearly digested flies, a characteristic not commonly found in Arctic environments.

The sighting of this plant is a rare occurrence, with the last recorded instance dating back to 2012 when scientists found bladderwort samples near Kimmirut, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Iqaluit. During their Arctic expeditions, the scientific team identified over 30 new plant species across the Arctic archipelago.

Koehler believes this discovery may be indicative of climate change effects. While the Arctic has historically had few invasive species due to its harsh conditions, the warming climate is now fostering a more hospitable environment for non-native plant species. The prolonged summers and milder winters are causing vegetation in the Arctic to flourish, paving the way for invasive and native species to expand their presence in the region.

Paul Sokoloff, a senior research assistant at Ottawa’s Museum of Nature, shares Koehler’s concerns. Sokoloff, who participated in the 2012 study that unearthed bladderwort in the Arctic, worries about the potential influx of plant seeds carried by birds, cargo ships, and visitors’ footwear into Arctic ecosystems. The introduction of invasive species poses a threat to native plants, a scenario already observed in other parts of Canada, such as Ontario’s struggles with the invasive grass Phragmites.

While Koehler’s find is not expected to have a severe impact, Sokoloff emphasizes the importance of monitoring and preventing the spread of invasive plant species in the Arctic. A study by scientists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2025 identified over 2,500 species with the capability to encroach upon Arctic territories due to climate change effects.

Koehler intends to gather a sample of the Iqaluit bladderwort for further analysis at the Museum of Nature, aiming to contribute valuable insights into the plant’s northward expansion.
