The labor union representing 4,400 flight attendants at WestJet has issued a 72-hour strike notice, potentially leading to a strike during the busy summer travel season. The Canadian Union of Public Employees disclosed that there is a significant gap between the two parties on critical matters.

Alia Hussain, the chair of the union’s WestJet division, emphasized the need for changes and fair negotiations to secure a satisfactory agreement. Despite the strike notice, Hussain expressed hope for a resolution before the strike deadline, underscoring ongoing bargaining efforts.

In response to the union’s strike notice, WestJet announced a 72-hour lockout notice. The airline clarified its commitment to actively engaging in negotiations to achieve a mutually acceptable outcome. WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech acknowledged the inconvenience caused to passengers due to the escalating situation.

Although the issuance of notice does not guarantee a strike, the possibility of job action commencing on Sunday at 12:01 a.m. MT looms if a consensus is not reached. WestJet has been accommodating passengers with flexible booking options amid the uncertainty.

The union and the airline have also finalized protocols for managing flight operations and ensuring the safe return of cabin crew in the event of a work stoppage. Among the central issues raised by the union is the matter of unpaid ground duties, contrasting with WestJet’s stance on compensating all duties through a credit hour system.

Industry experts have highlighted the potential financial losses for WestJet in the event of a strike, especially during the peak summer travel period. With WestJet operating a significant volume of daily flights carrying thousands of passengers, the impact of any disruption could be substantial.
