A company in Saskatchewan is currently engaged in drilling for hydrogen with the aim of demonstrating the feasibility of extracting hydrogen from underground sources at a commercial scale, rather than relying on fossil fuel production methods. Recently, Max Power Mining, based in Regina, commenced drilling its third well at the Lawson Complex, located in southern Saskatchewan. The company envisions this endeavor as potentially establishing the world’s first large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system and introducing a new primary energy source.
Chad Levesque, the president and director of the company, emphasized the significance of hydrogen as a crucial component for various industrial processes, such as ammonia production, refining petroleum, and transitioning towards cleaner energy sources. He highlighted the importance of exploring ecologically friendly methods of sourcing hydrogen, with a particular emphasis on naturally occurring hydrogen.
Hydrogen, a versatile gas that can be utilized as a fuel or in fuel cells to generate electricity, offers the advantage of producing water as its only byproduct, thus emitting no direct greenhouse gases. It has been identified as a promising energy source to reduce emissions in challenging-to-decarbonize sectors like transportation and steelmaking.
The majority of commercially available hydrogen, known as grey hydrogen, is currently derived from fossil fuels without emissions reduction measures, resulting in significant carbon dioxide emissions. In contrast, green hydrogen, produced through water electrolysis using renewable energy sources, offers lower emissions but remains more costly compared to grey hydrogen.
Natural hydrogen, also referred to as white hydrogen, presents a potential solution that does not require energy-intensive industrial processes for production. It can be extracted from underground deposits with relatively lower greenhouse gas emissions, leveraging existing extraction techniques used for natural gas and helium.
The geological uniqueness of Saskatchewan allows for the accumulation of hydrogen in porous sand beds from ancient sea deposits, sealed beneath shale and salt layers. Natural hydrogen can originate from underground processes such as the reaction of oxygen with iron-rich rocks or the radioactive decay of uranium and thorium.
Despite the promising prospects of natural hydrogen, challenges remain in extracting hydrogen deposits effectively, especially when dissolved in water. Max Power Mining’s exploration at the Lawson Complex has shown promising results, with natural hydrogen gas flow observed during drilling operations, indicating potential viability for extraction.
While the development of natural hydrogen presents exciting opportunities, further research and exploration are needed to assess the commercial viability and environmental benefits on a larger scale. As projects worldwide are still in early stages, the industry awaits more data to determine the impact of natural hydrogen on global decarbonization efforts.
