Balsam fir trees in New Brunswick are displaying signs of distress, turning red and withering following a severe drought last summer. Concerns are mounting for the future of these iconic provincial trees. Anthony Taylor, a forestry researcher at the University of New Brunswick, has witnessed firsthand the detrimental effects on the evergreen trees traditionally used for Christmas decorations. He notes a consistent pattern of damage after hot, dry summers, such as the one experienced last year.
Taylor’s extensive research on the impact of climate change on New Brunswick’s forests has revealed similar instances of balsam fir die-offs after exceptionally warm and dry seasons in the past. The current situation is attributed to the trees halting photosynthesis prematurely in response to the drought conditions, hindering their growth and ability to produce essential energy stores for survival.
Due to their shallow root systems, balsam firs struggle to access sufficient water during dry periods, exacerbating their vulnerability. Peter McKeil, a woodlot owner, has observed significant damage to his trees, noting a gradual reddening from the lower branches upwards. He estimates the loss of approximately 100 trees so far and has adjusted his harvesting practices to salvage remaining firs before further casualties occur.
McKeil emphasizes the urgency of climate action, expressing concerns about the future viability of the species in southern New Brunswick due to worsening climatic conditions. Taylor underscores the visible impact of climate change on the balsam firs as a critical indicator requiring immediate attention and proactive measures to combat its effects. He stresses the need to transition away from fossil fuels and adopt sustainable forest management practices to mitigate the escalating threats posed by climate change.
