The Canadian Elite Basketball League has reverted to a single-game championship format following a decision made in response to a court safety issue that led to the cancellation of the best-of-three final between the Winnipeg Sea Bears and the Brampton Honey Badgers. The game was called off due to unsafe playing conditions caused by condensation on the court. As a result, a one-game championship will now take place in Winnipeg on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET. This decision marks a return to the previous championship format used from 2019 to 2025.

Brampton had initially taken the lead in the final match before it was halted, with Winnipeg equalizing shortly after. The Sea Bears’ star player, Xavier Moon, slipped on the court, prompting the stoppage of play. Despite the cancellation of the multi-game final series, the league deemed a one-game championship as the fairest and most practical way to determine the champion.

Honey Badgers CEO Al Whitley expressed regret over the game’s cancellation, with Brampton having won the first two encounters against Winnipeg earlier in the season. The Sea Bears, on the other hand, have made an impressive playoff run, defeating strong opponents like the Saskatoon Mamba and the Vancouver Bandits to reach the championship series.

The final matchup will not only showcase on-court talent but also an interesting off-court narrative, as both competing teams are owned by siblings. David Asper leads the Sea Bears, while his brother Leonard Asper owns the Honey Badgers. This championship game promises to be a thrilling showdown between two determined teams vying for the prestigious CEBL title.
