The Billy Bishop Legion in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighborhood offers a unique blend of veterans enjoying pints in an English-style pub and individuals practicing yoga on bright mats beside military relics. One regular, Hannah, finds solace and connection through yoga and the sense of community the Legion provides. Across Canada, Legions traditionally dominated by veterans are now reaching out to younger demographics like Hannah with innovative events, affordable dining options, and a welcoming atmosphere. To celebrate the Royal Canadian Legion’s 100th anniversary, free memberships are offered to newcomers nationwide.

The Legion’s role in supporting veterans and hosting community events remains vital. Nujma Bond, a spokesperson for the Royal Canadian Legion, highlighted the organization’s ongoing commitment while embracing new ideas and members. The Legion has seen significant growth this year, welcoming over 100,000 new members, surpassing a total membership of 300,000. Despite successes, some Legions have faced closures due to financial challenges, prompting a need for innovation and adaptation.

Dennis Mills, President of the Bala Legion in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, reflected on the branch’s transformation from near closure to a thriving community hub. The Legion now offers affordable meals, concerts, and open doors to all. Plans to evolve further include providing affordable housing units on Legion land to ensure sustainability. Mills emphasized the importance of attracting new members to maintain the Legion’s vitality and service to the community.
