Dolly Parton generously provided countless free books to children through her Imagination Library, a program she considered a great honor to spearhead, as revealed by Chaya Kulkarni, a committee member of the Library’s book selection team and director of infant and early mental health promotion at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.
Kulkarni shared insights during an interview with guest host Susan Ormiston from The Current, expressing that Parton viewed the Imagination Library and its impact as a privilege stemming from a deep emotional connection to her own childhood.
Parton, who passed away at the age of 80, was celebrated not only for her contributions to country music and popular culture but also for her philanthropic endeavors. She launched the Imagination Library in 1995, distributing over 300 million books globally, including five million in Canada and 730,595 in 2025 alone. Children eligible for the program receive one free book monthly until they reach the age of five.
In honor of her late father, who faced literacy challenges, Parton initiated the program and expressed immense pride in its accomplishments, stating that it was among her most cherished achievements. Following her demise, her family requested donations to the Imagination Library in lieu of flowers, with assurances from the program’s management that book distributions will persist.
Kulkarni reflected on Parton’s character and legacy, emphasizing her kindness, generosity, and dedication to inspiring individuals across various domains. The Imagination Library, which extends its reach beyond the U.S. and Canada to countries like Australia, the U.K., and Ireland, has impacted millions of children worldwide, emphasizing the program’s importance in promoting literacy and cultural diversity.
The initiative requires community involvement for funding support, with families signing up to receive monthly books tailored to each child.
