Four individuals, including two adolescents and an infant, were rescued from a rapidly spreading house fire with the help of an off-duty RCMP officer who promptly intervened to assist a distressed man in extracting his family through a basement window.
Constable Anton Lorde, returning home after his shift on July 18, noticed a dense plume of smoke rising into the air. Tracking it to Mount Pleasant Street in the Whitney Pier neighborhood of Sydney, N.S., he found a residence engulfed in flames emanating from various directions.
Initially presuming the house to be empty due to the presence of several onlookers, Lorde began clearing the street to facilitate the fire trucks’ arrival.
Upon learning from a neighbor that numerous individuals, including children, resided there, he swiftly acted by heading to the backyard, where he proceeded to knock on the windows of the burning structure, searching for any occupants.
Subsequently, a startled boy peered through the blinds at Lorde, who urged him to evacuate, intensifying his efforts as the child retreated from sight.
Amid the chaos, the father of the children emerged, prompting a joint effort with Lorde to rescue the trapped individuals from the hazardous situation.
Interviewed at the scene of the incident, Peter Magliaro recounted being alerted by his niece about the fire as he rushed back home, navigating through the intense heat and flames to ensure the safety of his loved ones.
Acting swiftly, Magliaro managed to secure the baby girl from her mother, passing her to Lorde, unbeknownst to him that the assistance came from a police officer not in uniform.
With the help of his brother-in-law, who resided nearby, Magliaro successfully evacuated his other children, acknowledging the collaborative rescue effort that unfolded.
Reflecting on the event, Lorde attributed the successful rescue to the collective actions of those present, underscoring the importance of community support in times of crisis.
While commended for his heroic actions by onlookers, Lorde remained humble, emphasizing that he was destined to be present at the critical moment.
The municipal fire department responded promptly to the incident, salvaging the family’s pets amid the ongoing investigations into the cause of the fire by the fire marshal’s office and the Cape Breton Regional Police.
Magliaro, suspecting foul play in the fire, expressed his intent to offer a reward for information leading to the apprehension of those responsible for the arson incident.
Grateful for the support received, Magliaro and his family have relocated temporarily and are determined to rebuild their home at the site where they have resided for over three decades.
As the investigations progress, Magliaro anticipates a resolution in the coming weeks, eager to rebuild and restore normalcy to his family’s life.
