A massive sinkhole opened up in front of a coastal mansion in Malibu, reportedly owned by actor Nicolas Cage, causing the driveway to collapse. The incident led to a gas leak that was contained by authorities and utility services, resulting in a temporary shutdown of natural gas services in the area as a precaution against coastal erosion.
The sinkhole, measuring approximately 7.5 to nine meters in depth and 18 meters wide, extended into the roadway. Local officials declared a state of emergency and ordered the evacuation of 31 properties in the vicinity.
Although representatives for Cage did not provide immediate comments, property records indicated that the mansion was sold in 2024, with the previous owner confirming Cage as the buyer. The property sustained damage during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area due to the effects of Hurricane Marie, which transitioned into a tropical storm.
The City of Malibu mentioned that the sinkhole incident was related to broader coastal conditions affecting the region. The city is actively monitoring coastal erosion in various areas, including the Pacific Coast Highway and other vulnerable coastal points.
Situated between the ocean and the Pacific Coast Highway, the private neighborhood where the mansion is located faced the sinkhole incident. Cage, aged 62, recently starred in the Amazon series “Spider-Noir” and will portray John Madden in an upcoming biographical film about the NFL coach and commentator. With a career spanning over 100 films, Cage won an Oscar for his role in “Leaving Las Vegas.”
