Gary Southgate’s dream of showcasing the “Valley of Hidden Secrets” in southwest Saskatchewan’s Frenchman River Valley has come to life with the launch of Eastend Scenic Rail Tours. Southgate, a farmer from North Battleford, Saskatchewan, has been passionately collecting old trains since 2013, aiming to revive their historical significance.
The journey with trains began in Southgate’s childhood, watching steam locomotives pass by from Biggar to North Battleford. Starting with a 1929 Canadian Pacific Railway steam locomotive, Southgate later focused on acquiring CN equipment to recreate the ambiance of the old Super Continental passenger trains. His collection has grown significantly, with numerous railcars saved from salvage yards for potential restoration and future use.
Despite facing challenges, such as disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and managing his farm while launching the tour, Southgate remains determined. Eastend Scenic Rail Tours has successfully operated several trips this year, attracting visitors from various locations, including international tourists from Paris, France. Southgate envisions expanding the tour’s offerings, including developing an RV park, a museum, and a winter maintenance facility at the railyard.
With a deep-rooted passion for trains and a commitment to preserving history, Southgate aims to leave a lasting legacy in Eastend, Saskatchewan, and beyond. He is optimistic about the future of the tour and hopes to inspire others to continue his work in celebrating Canada’s railway heritage.
