A Canadian woman working as an intern at NATO’s military headquarters in Belgium has been apprehended on espionage charges, according to Belgian authorities. The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that she is suspected of spying for a foreign country and being associated with a criminal group. The woman, a Canadian citizen of Chinese descent, was interning at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium. The specific identity of the woman, the third country involved, and the criminal organization are yet to be disclosed.
Public Safety Canada refrained from providing details due to the ongoing investigation but assured Canadians that government law enforcement and intelligence agencies are collaborating with partner agencies to address security threats similar to those allegedly linked to the arrest in Belgium.
SHAPE, NATO’s primary military headquarters, houses the Allied Command Operations responsible for coordinating operations within the transatlantic security alliance. The suspect came to the attention of SHAPE’s security services, which subsequently alerted Belgian intelligence authorities leading to her arrest. Both her residence and workplace at SHAPE were searched, and she was detained on Friday. SHAPE confirmed that there was no impact on NATO’s operational readiness or ongoing tasks due to the arrest and assured that their responsibilities are being carried out as usual.
