U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he and a group of artificial intelligence company leaders have voluntarily agreed to conduct both internal and external reviews of the technology. During a meeting at the White House, Trump expressed his appreciation for the industry’s commitment to self-regulation, emphasizing the importance of self-policing.
The meeting, which involved top executives from leading tech firms who are investing heavily in AI infrastructure, addressed concerns about the rapid development of AI technology. Despite calls from some executives to slow down AI advancements due to instances of AI agents malfunctioning, Trump reassured that the U.S. government would not restrict AI development or impose “guardrails.”
Key figures in the AI industry, including CEOs such as Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Greg Brockman of OpenAI, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, and Elon Musk of X social media platform, were present at the White House meeting. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and other prominent tech leaders also attended the gathering.
While some AI executives have raised alarms about the need for safety measures to keep pace with AI advancements, others like Huang and Zuckerberg have downplayed concerns about AI going out of control. Vice-President JD Vance, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Republican Speaker of the House, Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson, were among the officials present at the event.
During the event, an AI chatbot named America.gov was unveiled, aimed at assisting Americans in accessing government services online. Trump expressed optimism about the potential of AI technology, highlighting its significance for future growth and innovation.
Following the meeting, Trump commended the AI industry for embracing self-regulation and noted that executives agreed to address community opposition to data centers by providing support to local schools or reducing energy costs. Additionally, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the company’s focus on safety, including pausing the rollout of new models when necessary.
Geoffrey Hinton, a prominent figure in artificial intelligence, raised concerns about Trump’s understanding of AI and the need for proper oversight to ensure safety. Trump, on the other hand, emphasized the global competition in AI development, particularly between the U.S. and China, highlighting the importance of leading in this technological race.
