Driver Jody Jamieson and his horse Fifth and Five emerged victorious in the 67th edition of the Gold Cup and Saucer race held in Charlottetown on Saturday night. Jamieson expressed his disbelief and elation at the win, describing it as a dream come true. While he has won races with higher prize money before, he emphasized the prestige of this particular victory.
The Gold Cup and Saucer race, featuring a prize purse of $100,000, attracts participants from various parts of North America to the Red Shores Racetrack and Casino annually. Jamieson, who has been following the race since childhood, recalled his father’s win in 2006 with the longshot Banner Yankee as a favorite memory until now.
Reflecting on his strategy during the race, Jamieson revealed that he maintained a close watch on the horse and driver in the first post position to secure his own victory. Fifth and Five, the winning pair, completed the race in 1:49.4, with Jamieson praising the horse for its suitability for the track and impeccable behavior.
Following the race, Jamieson and his team celebrated in the winners’ circle, with Jamieson expressing overwhelming joy and describing the win as a lifelong dream fulfilled. He indicated that the feeling of triumph was so profound that he might never fully come down from it, and he was content with that realization.
