In recent events, Israeli military actions in southern Lebanon resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals as reported by the country’s health ministry. This incident marked the deadliest assault post a fragile truce agreement in June, aimed at ceasing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, despite ongoing attacks.

Apart from the airstrikes and drone strikes, local residents and first responders have accused Israeli forces of deliberately igniting wildfires that have been ravaging homes, forests, and olive groves in the troubled region. The situation has instilled fear among the populace regarding their ability to remain in the area and the uncertainty of the hundreds of thousands displaced by the conflict ever being able to return.

Will Christou, a correspondent for The Guardian stationed in Beirut, has been providing coverage on the wildfires and the wider Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon.

A correction is warranted for a previous version of this episode, which erroneously stated the involvement of Israel in a June 2026 memorandum of understanding signed by the United States, Israel, and Iran. Israel was not a signatory to that accord, and this error has been rectified.
