NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, hailing from Hamilton and previously playing junior hockey with the Ottawa 67’s, is currently in a hospital in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as confirmed by the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Mayich, aged 21, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft. His player record indicates that he was part of the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s.
According to the OHL, Mayich was hospitalized on August 20 while gearing up for the 2026-27 season in Arizona. The St. Louis Blues have expressed their concerns and well wishes for Mayich’s recovery. The University, where Mayich is listed as a player, stated that a hockey team member collapsed during an outdoor morning exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Doug Armstrong, the Blues’ president of hockey operations, released a statement mentioning that the organization is keeping Mayich in their thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford also extended support to Mayich and his family during this challenging time. The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly the Huskies, previously shared congratulatory messages with Mayich when he signed with the ’67s and when the Blues drafted him in 2023.
The entire hockey community, including the OHL and the Blues, is rallying behind Mayich and hoping for his swift recovery.
