President Donald Trump revealed on Wednesday his decision to bestow the Presidential Medal of Freedom upon retired MLB pitcher Roger Clemens, hailing him as potentially the greatest pitcher in history with his seven Cy Young Awards.

Speaking at a rally in San Antonio, Trump reiterated his push for Clemens to be included in the prestigious Baseball Hall of Fame. This recognition has eluded the pitcher, nicknamed “The Rocket,” due to suspicions of steroid use during his extensive 24-year career playing for teams like the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros.

Trump emphasized the significance of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, stating it is one of the highest accolades alongside the Congressional Medal of Honor. He expressed confidence that Clemens, as one of the most exceptional athletes and pitchers, will eventually secure a spot in the Hall of Fame.

The president highlighted the distinction of the medal compared to the Hall of Fame, underlining its importance. Throughout his tenure, Trump has bestowed this honor upon several athletes, including Tiger Woods, Roger Staubach, Mariano Rivera, and Lou Holtz. Posthumously, the medal was awarded to Elvis Presley and Rush Limbaugh.

The unexpected announcement was made towards the end of a lengthy speech by Trump, who acknowledged Clemens’ presence at the event. The former pitcher, visibly surprised, expressed his gratitude on stage, remarking, “Well, I’m stunned.”

Clemens expressed his gratitude for the honor, stating that receiving it from President Trump was particularly meaningful. He praised the president as a true winner, and the announcement being made in Texas held special significance for him as a Houston native.

Like other notable players suspected of using performance-enhancing drugs, Clemens faced repeated rejections from baseball writers for Hall of Fame induction. While alternative paths exist, the journey towards recognition remains challenging.

Trump’s support for baseball greats extends to his advocacy for Pete Rose, resulting in a posthumous pardon and the lifting of MLB’s ban on the all-time hits leader. The president has also championed Rose’s inclusion in the Hall of Fame, a campaign that has yet to materialize.
