The Toronto Blue Jays are set to honor veteran broadcaster Buck Martinez by inducting him into the team’s newly established Hall of Excellence this Saturday at Rogers Centre. Martinez, who recently concluded his broadcasting career after covering over 4,000 games, has had a remarkable association with the organization spanning nearly four decades, serving as a player, manager, and broadcaster.

Expressing his gratitude on CBC Radio’s Metro Morning ahead of the ceremony, Martinez acknowledged the honor bestowed upon him, noting that it was something he never anticipated during his tenure in various roles with the team. He credited Blue Jays fans for their unwavering support over the years, making him feel like a part of their extended family.

Known for his distinctive broadcasting style characterized by phrases like “a swing and a drive” and “get outta here ball,” Martinez explained that these catchphrases evolved during his return to Toronto in 2010 as the play-by-play announcer, drawing inspiration from his past experiences in Milwaukee and the influence of legendary broadcaster Bob Uecker.

Reflecting on his transition to retirement, Martinez confessed that it marked a significant change after being involved in professional baseball since 1967. Despite intending to participate in the Jays’ 50th season celebrations, he had to step away due to health concerns, having battled cancer for the second time in 2025 (having been initially diagnosed in 2022). However, he joyfully shared that he is now cancer-free and in good health.

The Hall of Excellence, located on the 100 Level concourse behind right field, will feature an exhibit honoring notable figures who have left a lasting impact on the franchise, including players, coaches, builders, and broadcasters. Notably, the current 11 members on the team’s Level of Excellence roster will also be included in the prestigious display, featuring iconic names such as Jose Bautista, Joe Carter, and Roy Halladay.

Martinez reminisced about his initial apprehensions upon joining the Blue Jays in 1981, feeling like he was being “exiled” from his previous teams. However, he soon realized the passion and support for baseball within the city and the country, transforming his perception of Toronto into a cherished destination for players. He also commended the memorable 2025 World Series, particularly highlighting the intense Game 7 and the exceptional team dynamics showcased.

In a reflective moment, Martinez expressed surprise at witnessing the struggles of standout player Vladimir Guerrero Jr. amid a challenging season for the Blue Jays, acknowledging the demanding nature of the game even for top performers.
