U.S. President Donald Trump declared on social media Wednesday his intention to initiate what he described as “the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY” against Iran. Trump announced on Truth Social that this would involve Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale, providing minimal specifics.

He also cautioned about potential economic repercussions for any nation supporting Tehran or offering assistance to Iran. Trump emphasized that any country permitting its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to aid Iran would face significant Economic Consequences. While not naming any specific country, Trump urged an immediate halt to activities such as oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in numerous casualties over the past six months, drawing involvement from countries across the Gulf region. Iran’s control over shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil trade, has rattled global markets. Previous ceasefire agreements between the U.S. and Iran to restore normal shipping operations in the Strait have failed, despite efforts to de-escalate the conflict.

In recent developments, the United Arab Emirates, home to a significant U.S. military presence, announced the suspension of all trade activities, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran following claims of missile launches from Iranian territory. China, a major buyer of Iranian oil, faces potential economic repercussions if the U.S. extends its economic warfare to include China, given its status as a key exporter to the U.S.

Despite the tensions, there are conflicting reports regarding U.S.-Iran talks. While an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader expressed openness to dialogue without compromising Iran’s stance, Trump denied any ongoing negotiations with Iran. However, Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and special envoy, suggested that talks with Iran were still in progress and possibly more substantial than before.
