In an unfortunate turn of events, just days before finalizing a new collective bargaining agreement, Canada’s national basketball team faced a setback. The team was eliminated from World Cup contention by Toronto Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello’s Australian squad. Despite the disappointment, Brondello expressed optimism for Canada’s future, acknowledging their strong roster and potential for growth.

While Canada won’t be competing in the upcoming World Cup, they achieved success in a pre-qualifying tournament by defeating Mexico and securing a spot in the 2028 Olympic qualifier. Syla Swords, a standout young player, was named tournament MVP, showcasing her talent alongside other promising athletes.

The Canadian team, comprising a mix of experienced veterans and emerging talents, demonstrated resilience and commitment during the tournament. Head coach Nell Fortner praised the team’s dedication to the sport and highlighted the potential of players like Swords to shine on the international stage.

Although missing out on the World Cup was disappointing, Fortner emphasized the importance of the team’s achievements and the valuable experience gained. With a focus on building chemistry and developing young talents, Canada is preparing for upcoming challenges, including the Olympic qualifier and the FIBA AmeriCup.

The growth of Canadian talent at the NCAA level has been remarkable, attracting attention and raising hopes for the future of basketball in the country. With the ongoing development of players and support from initiatives like the Toronto Tempo, there is optimism for the national program’s success in the years to come.
