Katie Cosgriffe claimed Canada’s initial gold medal at the Para Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Walnut, California, concluding the event’s closing night. The 20-year-old from Burlington, Ontario, emerged victorious in the women’s multi-class 100-meter backstroke final, achieving a season-best time of 1:08.1. Her triumph was determined by her total of 962 points, securing her first individual international medal.

The Para Pan Pacs is a multi-class competition that brings together athletes with various physical, visual, and intellectual impairments. Winners are not determined by who touches the wall first but by a points system based on how close a swimmer’s time is to the designated world record standard for their specific class.

Cosgriffe expressed her approach to the race, stating, “I knew that I could win, but I wanted to go in with no expectations, just swim my own race.” Despite falling slightly short of her time goal, she was elated with her performance, describing it as a satisfying end to a challenging season.

Cosgriffe, aiming to use the event as a benchmark for the upcoming Summer Games in Los Angeles, highlighted the significance of her achievements and her plans for future competitions. Her success in the 100m backstroke was followed by a silver medal in the 100 butterfly, where she set new Canadian and Americas S10 records.

In the men’s events, Nicholas Bennett secured a silver medal in the 200m individual medley, his second medal of the competition. Bennett, who also claimed silver in the 200m freestyle earlier, demonstrated his determination and skill in the pool.

The championships not only showcased outstanding performances but also served as preparation for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. The athletes had the opportunity to compete outdoors, experiencing conditions similar to what they might encounter in LA. This allowed them to adapt and strategize for future competitions.

As the Para Pan Pacific Swimming Championships concluded, Canada celebrated a successful campaign with a total of nine medals, including two gold, six silver, and one bronze. The event provided valuable insights and learnings for the Canadian team as they look ahead to upcoming challenges and competitions.

Overall, the Para Pan Pacific Swimming Championships proved to be a platform for athletes to excel, set records, and pave the way for future success in international competitions.
