Prime Minister Mark Carney has designated Jeremy Hansen as a special adviser for space initiatives, coinciding with increased U.S. attention towards Canada’s shift in space partnerships to Europe. Hansen expressed his enthusiasm for the role in a social media video on Tuesday, highlighting the potential to enhance Canada’s sovereignty, security, quality of life, and global contributions.

Hansen, a part of the recent Artemis II mission that ventured beyond the moon, had proposed a new space strategy upon departing from the Canadian Space Agency. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly mentioned ongoing consultations with Canadian astronauts and aerospace experts to accelerate innovation and fortify international collaborations.

Details surrounding Hansen’s appointment, including its duration and compensation, were not disclosed by Carney and Joly’s offices. Meanwhile, Defence Minister David McGuinty unveiled a $20 million agreement for utilizing a space launch complex in southern Newfoundland, reinforcing Canada’s satellite deployment capabilities in uncertain global scenarios.

Canada’s collaboration with European nations in space endeavors is expanding, with signals of a shift away from partnering with American firm SpaceX. U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra acknowledged Canada’s inclination towards the European Space Agency over SpaceX, emphasizing the U.S.’s commitment to private sector involvement in space missions.

Hoekstra also touched on Canada’s defense re-evaluation amidst trade tensions, mentioning the F-35 jet and the importance of continued airspace cooperation through NORAD. The U.S. is keen on aligning security interests with Canada, particularly in light of recent developments in the Arctic region.
