Barclays has started paying out compensation to customers who were affected by a major outage earlier this year. Thousands of people were left unable to make and receive payments at the end of January following a glitch that lasted several days.
The outage coincided with payday for millions of Brits, as well as the HMRC self-assessment tax deadline. Barclays previously confirmed that if you were left out of pocket due to the glitch, it would compensate you. For example, if you couldn’t pay a bill and were hit with late payments.
The Sun reports that most payments are being made today, although it may take longer for more complicated cases. The payment will appear in your mobile app payment feed as “Barclays UK Refu” followed by the payment amount.
If you’re due a payment, you should receive a letter in the post from Barclays. One person said: “Does anyone have any idea why @Barclays would send me a payment for £50?”
A second said: “Barclays just refunded me £600?? I don’t know what’s going on down there but I will be taking that money.” And a third commented: “Did anyone else randomly receive 50 pounds from Barclays.”
In an update last month, Barclays said it could pay out up to £7.5million in compensation to customers that were affected by the outage, which was caused by a software problem in a part of Barclays’ mainframe operating system. At the time, a spokesperson from Barclays said it was using its own records to try and identify customers that may have been impacted, and said it is prioritising those who are considered vulnerable.
Customers can also raise a complaint directly with Barclays on 0800 282 390 from the UK, or +44 (0)207 116 7488 from abroad. If you’re not happy with the outcome of your complaint, you can contact the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) for free.
You can also write to Barclays by sending a letter to: Freepost Barclays Customer Relations. Barclays says it aims to respond to complaints within three days, but says this can take longer in complex cases.

New data published by the Treasury Committee today revealed there has been more than 33 days’ worth of unplanned tech and system outages in the last two years for nine of the UK’s biggest banks and building societies. In total, Barclays could pay out up to £12.5million in compensation to customers affected by outages over the last two years.
A Barclays spokesperson said: “We welcome the opportunity to engage with the Treasury Select Committee and responded in detail to the questions the committee raised. Supporting and serving our customers remains our number one priority. We continue to work hard to keep all our services available and we are deeply sorry to customers who have been impacted by any service outage.”
