Donald Trump may pull ‘unhinged’ Pope stunt after funeral, warns Jimmy Kimmel

Published:

US chat show host, Jimmy Kimmel, has told his viewers he’s concerned about Donald Trump’s behaviour following Pope Francis’ death. In sad news, it was announced on Monday that the pontiff had died, aged 88 after suffering a stroke and subsequent heart failure.

Following the announcement, which was made by Cardinal Kevin Farrell – and left much of the world in mourning – Trump announced he would be attending the Pope’s funeral in Rome on Saturday. However, Jimmy, has warned the polarising figure may have other ideas up his sleeve as he shared his prediction during his Jimmy Kimmel Live show on Monday night.

Addressing his audience, he said: “Trump announced that he will be attending the Pope’s funeral. He said they’re ‘looking forward’ to being there, like he got tickets to Coachella or something.”

Suggesting The Apprentice star may do more than just attend the service by, bizarrely, declaring himself the Pope, he continued: “What are the chances Trump declares himself Pope? “They’re not zero. They are not zero!” he laughed.

Elsewhere in his monologue, he shared a clip of the president, praising the Pope for “being a good man who loved the world”. Mocking Trump, Kimmel said: “He was a good man, who loved the world and loved wearing pointy hats”.

Trump was just one of the famous faces around the world, who paid tribute to the pontiff, whose funeral will be in Rome on Saturday.

Pope Francis had suffered a number of health issues over the last few months as he was admitted to the Gemelli hospital in Rome for bronchitis treatment in February.

Announcing his death on Easter Monday, Cardinal Farrell said: “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7.35am, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.

“His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalized.

“With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”

Paying tribute, actress Whoopi Goldberg was one of the first to react to the news. Alongside an image of her standing alongside the Pope, she wrote: “He was the closest in a long time that seemed to remember that Christ’s love enveloped believer and none believer.

“He felt more like Pope John the 23rd who made belief real. Sail on Pope Francis with your love of humanity & laughter.”

Meanwhile, Spanish star, Antonio, shared: “Pope Francisco has died — a man who, at the head of the Catholic Church, showed kindness, love, and mercy to the neediest people. @franciscus #RIP #DEP.”
