A quaint UK village has been identified as one of the nation’s posh hotspots – with its roast dinner being hailed as one of the best in the country. Situated on the outskirts of Guildford and a short distance from Godalming, Shackleford in Surrey was the setting for romantic Christmas hit The Holiday.
The village was ranked among the UK’s poshest villages by the Telegraph in 2024. With top schools, stunning homes and an abundance of pubs and eateries, it’s no wonder the village is held in such high regard. The idyllic location is a magnet for hikers and ramblers, thanks to the surrounding scenic countryside, and the local pubs offer the perfect respite for those exploring the area.
One of the village’s endearing pubs is frequently lauded for serving up some of the finest roast dinners around.
The esteemed Cyder House Inn in Shackleford is rated second out of over 40 pubs in Godalming on Tripadvisor, boasting a 4.5-star rating from nearly 400 reviews and bagging a 2023 Traveller’s Choice Award.
Patrons have left glowing reviews, with one visitor extolling the “excellent Sunday lunch” as the “best pub roast” while another commended the “Great food and friendly staff. Dog-friendly too.”
Additional comments highlighted the pub’s “cosy” atmosphere and applauded its “the best” vegan offerings. Over the past year, the average price for a home in Shackleford was nearly £632,000, with detached homes typically going for around £835,000.
Only one sale exceeded the £1 million mark, according to Rightmove data, while terraced houses averaged at £225,000. However, The Telegraph reports the average house price in the area as £1.36m.
Rightmove, which bases its figures on Land Registry data, reveals that overall sold prices in Shackleford experienced an 80 per cent decrease over the last year compared to the previous year, and a 70 per cent drop from the 2017 peak of £2.13m.
Although Shackleford doesn’t have its own train station, residents are just a 10-minute drive away from Guildford and Farncombe Stations, providing direct links to London.
If you’re planning a visit to Shackleford, get ready for a laid-back day in a stunning part of the world. It’s not a village brimming with tourist attractions beyond the pub or bustling with activity, but that’s part of its allure.
Life here is slow-paced and tranquil, which is precisely why the villagers adore it so much.
If you’re yearning for a picturesque UK getaway and have already explored the charming avenues of Shackleford, then consider venturing to Kynance Cove on the Lizard Peninsula. Though it spans just 200 metres, this cove compensates with its breathtaking environment.
EnjoyTravel has likened it to “like a slice of Sardinia” because of its vivid blue waters. This beach has captivated lovers of the coast for centuries and has even been crowned the best beach in the UK.
