Keir Starmer is scheduled to host a meeting at Downing Street on Monday with President Zelensky, President Macron, and Chancellor Merz to discuss ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister will highlight the UK’s support for Ukraine and engage in discussions regarding the ongoing negotiations between the US and Ukraine aimed at securing Ukraine’s safety post-war.
Earlier, the four leaders participated in a virtual meeting organized by Mr. Starmer and Mr. Macron to establish a European peacekeeping force that could be deployed to Ukraine if a ceasefire is achieved.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, peace remains elusive in Ukraine, where Russia recently carried out a significant drone and missile attack. The assault resulted in power outages and heating disruptions in Ukraine, with Russia launching numerous missiles and drones at civilian infrastructure, causing damage and impacting the lives of residents.
Simultaneously, US and Ukrainian officials are holding talks in Florida to advance discussions on an American-backed peace proposal for Ukraine. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has already objected to certain aspects of the plan, particularly concerning Ukraine’s territorial integrity and measures to prevent future Russian aggression.
The Prime Minister has emphasized Ukraine’s right to determine its own future and stressed the importance of the peacekeeping force in ensuring the country’s security.
Negotiators from the US and Ukraine have acknowledged that progress towards a resolution hinges on Russia’s genuine commitment to long-term peace. The White House’s new national security strategy affirms its dedication to Ukraine’s survival as a viable state while also aiming to enhance relations with Moscow to restore strategic stability.
