Apple’s AirTag has become a must-have solution for those who frequently misplace their keys. Launched in 2021, these small disc-shaped trackers gained popularity for their ability to pinpoint lost items on an interactive map. AirTags are versatile and can be attached to keys, placed in bags, laptop cases, or luggage with ease.
The latest iteration of AirTag has been introduced, featuring an enhanced Ultra Wideband chip that extends its range significantly. Apple claims that this update improves Precision Finding by up to 50%, making it simpler to locate lost items from greater distances. Additionally, Precision Finding is now compatible with selected Apple Watch models, enabling users to track down misplaced items directly from their wrist.
Apple has improved the new AirTag’s sound capabilities by redesigning the internal speaker to emit sounds that are 50% louder than its predecessor. This enhancement is beneficial for locating the AirTag in hard-to-reach places like behind sofa cushions or amidst clutter.
AirTags leverage Apple’s expansive Find My network, which utilizes nearby Apple devices to relay location updates anonymously to the owner. The system has been revamped with a focus on privacy. Apple ensures that AirTags do not store location history on the device and all communication with the Find My network is encrypted end-to-end, guaranteeing that only the owner can access its location information.
The updated AirTag seamlessly integrates with the Share Item Location feature on iOS, allowing users to securely share an item’s location with trusted third parties, such as airlines, to aid in recovering lost belongings like delayed luggage. Apple has collaborated with over 50 airlines to support this functionality.
The new AirTag is now available for order on apple.com/uk and the Apple Store app, with in-store availability expected later this week. Additionally, pricing starts at £29 for a single AirTag or £99 for a pack of four, offering a more affordable option compared to the original version, which started at £35 upon launch.
