Nigel Farage’s election campaign is under scrutiny as a former aide has alleged that Reform UK may have violated spending regulations. The accusations involve inaccurate reporting of election expenses during Farage’s MP candidacy in Clacton during the 2024 General Election. Despite previously failing to secure a seat seven times, Farage emerged victorious in the recent election. Richard Everett, a former Reform UK council member, has provided documents to the Metropolitan Police indicating that the party exceeded the £20,660 spending limit in Clacton.

The Metropolitan Police has referred the matter to the Essex Police for investigation. Essex Police confirmed they are reviewing a report concerning potential misreported expenses by a political entity. According to claims made by Everett to the Daily Telegraph, Reform allegedly failed to disclose expenditures on various items such as leaflets, banners, utility bills, and office refurbishment in Clacton.

Reform has vehemently denied any wrongdoing regarding election spending and labeled Everett as a “disgruntled ex-councillor” who was ousted from the party months earlier. Labour Party chairwoman Anna Turley has called for Farage to address the allegations and ensure transparency in compliance with electoral laws to uphold the integrity of democracy. Tory chairman Kevin Hollinrake has urged the authorities to investigate Everett’s assertions to maintain the fairness and freedom of elections.

In response, a spokesperson for Reform UK dismissed the allegations as baseless and stemming from a former member’s grievances. The party stands firm in denying any violations of electoral laws and anticipates vindication. Essex Police stated that they are evaluating the reported misreported expenses linked to the 2024 general election following a referral from the Metropolitan Police.
