A seismic event measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale has occurred in the Costa del Sol region. The earthquake, which occurred near Fuengirola, Malaga, reached a depth of 78 kilometers at 10:38 am local time. Reports indicate that tremors were felt as far as Cordoba, approximately 93 miles inland. Experts believe the quake likely originated in the upper mantle beneath the Iberian Peninsula, an area known for tectonic plate movement that can trigger seismic events. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries, and the extent of any potential material damage remains uncertain.

This event follows a recent uptick in earthquake activity in Andalusia, with 23 earthquakes recorded in the Malaga area in the past week, including a 3.2 magnitude tremor near Estepona earlier in the week. Notably, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake hit western Andalusia in February, affecting numerous municipalities in the region.

Seismic occurrences in southern Spain are attributed to the gradual collision of the African Plate with the Eurasian Plate, leading to periodic seismic activity in the area. Stay informed with email updates on the latest news stories.
