A civil engineering and groundworks company, Caldwell Construction Limited, has entered administration, jeopardizing over 400 jobs. Founded in 2007, the company has enlisted administrators from PKF Littlejohn Advisory to oversee its operations in Stoke-on-Trent and Warrington, Cheshire.

Paul Smith, a Partner at PKF Littlejohn Advisory UK LLP, highlighted the challenging conditions in the construction industry, citing rising costs, project delays, and market uncertainties as contributing factors. Despite a turnover of £58.4 million last year, Caldwell reported an operating profit of less than £1 million. Smith noted that recent pressures on cash flow and operations became unsustainable for the company.

Efforts to explore alternatives and solutions for Caldwell’s future were unsuccessful, leading to the decision to initiate insolvency proceedings. Joint Administrator Oliver Collinge emphasized the immediate focus on supporting employees and stakeholders while assessing the business’s assets and overall situation.

In a separate incident, Consumer Energy Solutions, a distinct entity from Caldwell, also faced administration in south Wales, affecting nearly 300 employees. The Swansea and Rhondda Cynon Taf-based company abruptly ceased trading, leaving staff members uncertain about their employment status just before the holiday season.

The collapse of Consumer Energy Solutions was attributed to the conclusion of the UK Government-backed Energy Company Obligation 4 scheme, resulting in proposed restructuring and job losses. The scheme, aimed at facilitating energy-efficient home upgrades, is set to conclude this year.

Administrators James Saunders and Michael Lennon of KR8 Advisory Limited were appointed to oversee Consumer Energy Solutions, ensuring that ongoing customer work cannot be fulfilled. The administration of the company is specific to Consumer Energy Solutions Limited and does not involve other entities within the City Energy Group.
