Britain’s billionaires have experienced a significant increase in wealth over the last year, contrasting with the financial struggles faced by many ordinary individuals, according to recent research. While numerous families continue to grapple with the high cost of living, the richest individuals have collectively gained an additional £11 billion, equivalent to over £30 million daily, as reported by Oxfam. The charity’s analysis reveals that 56 billionaires in the UK now possess a combined wealth equal to that of 27 million other Britons.

This trend of escalating fortunes among the already affluent is not confined to the UK alone. Oxfam’s study indicates that the total wealth of the world’s billionaires has surged to a record £13.6 trillion, following a near £1.9 trillion increase in the past year. The report also suggests that the global super-rich are amassing more political power and media influence, affecting civil liberties and legal systems worldwide. Simultaneously, almost half of the global population remains ensnared in poverty, with one in four individuals lacking the means to afford a regular meal.

Oxfam released its report coinciding with the commencement of the Davos economic forum, where influential figures from the business and political spheres convene in the luxurious Swiss ski resort annually. A previous report from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation found that over 14 million people in the UK were living in poverty in 2022/23, with a significant portion being working-age adults, children, and pensioners. Despite this, the average UK billionaire’s wealth has surged by an average of £231 million over the past year, indicating a stark disparity in financial growth between the ultra-rich and the average worker.

In addition to exacerbating wealth inequality, the report asserts that the concentration of wealth is undermining democracies globally. It points out a 16% increase in the wealth of the world’s billionaires since the previous year, coinciding with what it describes as US President Donald Trump’s “pro-billionaire agenda.” Oxfam highlights that billionaires now control more than half of the world’s major media companies and dominate social media platforms, including Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta and Elon Musk’s X. The charity also notes that eight of the top 10 artificial intelligence companies worldwide are led by billionaires.

Max Lawson, Oxfam’s head of inequality policy, explained that the surge in wealth among the super-rich is linked to the flourishing stock market and corporate profits, partially influenced by policies of the Trump administration. Sonya Sultan, Oxfam’s chief influencing officer for the UK, emphasized the global rejection of a system favoring billionaires and the need for systemic change to address growing inequalities and the concentration of power among the wealthy.
