Anthony Joshua, a former two-time heavyweight champion, has resumed training at the boxing gym nearly three weeks after a fatal car crash in Nigeria. Joshua, who was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck near Lagos, Nigeria, sustained minor injuries in the accident that claimed the lives of two of his close friends and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Their funerals were held in London on January 4.
After receiving hospital treatment following the crash, Joshua has been seen working out in the gym, describing it as “mental strength therapy.” He has also been spotted doing lower leg exercises, using a stationary bike, and swimming. Despite speculations about his future in boxing, Joshua has not made any official announcements regarding retirement.
Joshua’s uncle recently stated that the boxer had privately expressed his intention to retire from boxing following the car crash. However, Mirror Fighting reports that Joshua has not made a final decision on his career. The driver of the car, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged in connection with the crash, including charges of causing death by dangerous driving.
Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, emphasized that no discussions have been held regarding Joshua’s fighting future and that Joshua needs time to recover emotionally and physically before making any decisions. Hearn expressed confidence that Joshua will return to boxing when the time is right, but emphasized that the final decision rests with Joshua himself.
