A dramatic incident unfolded at the Australian Open when a ball kid collapsed, causing a pause in play on the first day of the tournament. The incident occurred during the match between Ekaterina Alexandrova and Zeynep Sonmez, with Alexandrova making a comeback just as the collapse happened.

Both players and court attendants rushed to assist the ball kid who fell at the side of the court, prompting the umpire to call for medical help and announce a temporary suspension of the match. Commentator Catherine Whitaker noted the impact on Alexandrova’s momentum as the players waited for assistance.

Sonmez received praise for her composed reaction during the unexpected break. The ball kid was eventually helped off the court to applause from the crowd after medical staff arrived. The interruption seemed to affect Alexandrova’s performance when play resumed, leading to some disruptions in her game.

Despite the setback, Sonmez managed to secure a remarkable victory in a closely contested match, winning 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in front of her supportive fans. As for Alexandrova, her focus will now shift to the women’s doubles event where she will team up with Venus Williams.

The day’s warm weather in Melbourne, with temperatures reaching 28 degrees Celsius, posed challenges not only for the ball kid but also for players like Liam Draxl, who required medical attention during his singles match due to the conditions.
