Barry Hearn has come to the defense of Ronnie O’Sullivan following his withdrawal from The Masters tournament, urging other snooker players to rise to the occasion in his absence. O’Sullivan, an accomplished eight-time Masters champion, cited health reasons for pulling out just days before the event in London. While there have been instances of O’Sullivan missing tournaments in the past year, his participation at this particular event was highly anticipated.

Hearn dismissed claims that O’Sullivan is solely driven by financial motives and emphasized that it is the responsibility of other players to engage fans when O’Sullivan is not competing. In an interview on the BBC’s Framed podcast, Hearn stated, “I’m not sure Ronnie is that money-motivated; I think that’s probably unfair on Ronnie. He plays when he wants to play and has set exceptionally high standards. He is a unique talent in snooker, and while someone better may emerge in the future, for now, he has earned the right to decide when and if he competes.”

Acknowledging the disappointment fans feel when O’Sullivan is absent, Hearn stressed the need for new talent to fill the void left by the snooker legend. He expressed, “The fans and remaining players must grasp the responsibility of stepping up to fill the gap left by O’Sullivan. The sport thrives with players like Ronnie, and ideally, we would have multiple talents like him in the future.”

Hearn speculated on the emergence of potential successors to O’Sullivan but emphasized the significant impact the snooker star has had on the sport. He concluded, “Ronnie has made immense contributions to snooker over the years, and his absence will be felt. While we hope for more games from him, our primary concern is his happiness in whatever he chooses to do.”
