A new image has emerged of a woman who was tragically abandoned near the summit of a mountain by her boyfriend, leading to her freezing to death. The incident occurred on Austria’s tallest peak, Grossglockner, where 33-year-old Kerstin Gurtner perished just 150ft from the summit due to extreme temperatures. Thomas Plamberger, a 36-year-old experienced mountaineer, is facing charges of manslaughter by gross negligence for allegedly leaving her unprotected and ill-equipped, delaying the rescue operation.

During their climb, webcam footage captured the diminishing lights of the climbers’ head torches as they ascended the mountain. Despite adverse weather conditions and Kerstin’s struggles, Plamberger urged her to continue until she became too exhausted and hypothermic to proceed. He then descended alone, purportedly to seek help but failed to provide adequate protection for Kerstin, resulting in her tragic demise.

Prosecutors revealed that the couple embarked on the climb late, lacked essential emergency gear, and ignored warning signs during the ascent. Plamberger, deemed responsible for the expedition, allegedly neglected Kerstin’s inexperience and delayed seeking assistance promptly. Despite repeated attempts by authorities to contact him, Plamberger only alerted rescue services hours later, leaving Kerstin stranded.

While Plamberger denies any wrongdoing, claiming the incident was an accident, prosecutors assert his negligence led to Kerstin’s death. The trial is set to commence in February, with a potential three-year prison sentence if he is convicted. The online community mourns Kerstin’s loss, remembering her as an adventurous spirit, as legal proceedings unfold to determine accountability in this heartbreaking tragedy.
