Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps has released new images from the site of a tragic accident involving renowned British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua. The organization has also provided detailed information on the incident that claimed the lives of two individuals.
Anthony Joshua was hospitalized after being rescued from an SUV that was involved in the crash on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Nigeria. The accident, caused by a burst tire, led the vehicle Joshua was in to veer off course and collide with a stationary lorry.
According to the Ogun State police, an investigation is ongoing, and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued an update on the matter.
On Monday, December 29, at 2:10 pm GMT, the FRSC shared new images showcasing the damaged SUV and the truck it crashed into, which had not been previously seen. The photographs depicted officials at the scene alongside witnesses, with the back of the truck visibly taped over.
In a series of statements, the FRSC confirmed the fatal crash involving Anthony Joshua’s vehicle and a stationary truck. The incident, which occurred near Sagamu, Ogun State, on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, resulted in two fatalities and injuries to others.
The FRSC highlighted that the crash was likely due to the Lexus Jeep, carrying Anthony Joshua, exceeding the speed limit and attempting a dangerous overtaking maneuver. They emphasized the dangers of speeding and reckless driving on Nigerian roads, urging motorists to adhere to traffic regulations for safety.
The FRSC extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Anthony Joshua a swift recovery. They reiterated the importance of safe driving practices and emphasized the need for motorists to prioritize safety over speed, particularly during holiday travel.
The Ogun State government reported that the two deceased individuals were foreign nationals, while Anthony Joshua, who has not publicly commented on the accident, remains hospitalized with his location undisclosed.
It is essential for all road users to heed safety precautions and cooperate with traffic regulations to prevent accidents and promote road safety nationwide.
