A specialist from British Gas has shared tips on how to address cold spots in your radiator, with a cost-effective solution priced at only 97p. If you notice cold areas, especially at the top of your radiator, or hear gurgling noises while it heats up slowly, it may be time to bleed the radiator. This simple fix requires a radiator key, which can be purchased for as little as 97p from Screwfix to release trapped air within the system.

Prior to bleeding the radiator, it is essential to turn off your heating system. Ensure the radiator has cooled down completely to avoid any potential burns from hot water. Have an old towel and container handy to catch the water that will come out during the bleeding process. Locate the small valve on the radiator and carefully turn it anti-clockwise using the radiator key.

Peter Knowles, a technical repair engineer at British Gas, advises to open the valve slightly until you hear a hissing sound, which indicates trapped air escaping. Once water starts to come out, collect it in the container, then tighten the valve and repeat the process on other radiators. Avoid over-turning the valve to prevent lowering the boiler pressure excessively. If issues persist, seek assistance from a gas safe registered engineer for a thorough inspection.

In related advice, British Gas energy engineer Jessica Rawstron suggests maximizing heat utilization by leaving the oven door open after cooking to warm up the kitchen gradually. This practice can help maintain a cozy atmosphere while dining and should be done cautiously to keep children and pets safe.

Energy bills have recently increased, with the average household paying around £1,758 annually for gas and electricity under the current price cap regulations. The cap sets limits on unit rates and standing charges but does not restrict total energy costs, which vary based on individual consumption. Customers on standard tariffs are subject to the price cap, with pre-payment meter users facing a yearly charge of £1,711 and bill payment customers at £1,894.
