Serita Thurton netted two goals in the opening half as the Calgary Wild, sitting at the bottom of the table, caused an upset by defeating the Ottawa Rapid, who lead the league, with a score of 4-3 in Northern Super League action at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Kahli Johnson put the hosts ahead 1-0 with a goal in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton doubling the lead to 2-0 about 13 minutes later. Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized at 2-2 just before the first half ended.
Thurton struck again just before halftime, securing her second goal of the match and propelling the Wild to victory. Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, who now record two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now have 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, seeing their 10-game unbeaten streak come to an end.
Although Ottawa had 54% possession, they were outshot by the Wild 16-13 (9-6 on target). The Wild earned six of the 11 corners in the game, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the game and then secured a second goal five minutes into the second-half stoppage time, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes gave the fourth-placed Tides a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 19th minute. The Rise had 56% possession and outshot the Tides 18-13, with a 6-4 advantage on target. The Tides took four of the six corners, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued.
