Canada is gearing up for its first appearance at the Eurovision Song Contest with high hopes of leaving a mark. While the competition is open to everyone, CBC/Radio-Canada is seeking a seasoned performer who can deliver a standout performance. Several potential contenders have already emerged, including Rêve, a Montreal native who clinched the 2023 Juno Award for Dance Recording of the Year, Talk, who wowed audiences at last year’s Canada Day concert and secured the Juno for breakthrough artist of the year in 2024, and bbno$, the two-time Fan Choice Juno winner in 2025 and 2026.
To be eligible, contestants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents aged 18 or older by May 1, 2027, capable of international travel, and able to pass standard background checks. In addition to these requirements, applicants must submit two videos showcasing their live performance skills and explaining their passion for Eurovision. Strong vocal abilities and proficiency in both official languages are essential for potential candidates.
The selection process is underway, with the application portal set to close on September 9. Jennifer Dettman, the head of delegation for the Eurovision Song Contest Canada, emphasized the importance of finding candidates with a significant digital presence, stage experience, and a European fan base. While established artists are currently favored for the shortlist, Dettman encouraged emerging talents to apply for future opportunities.
Following a public vote and jury selection, one artist will be chosen to represent Canada at Eurovision. The selected artist will play a pivotal role in shaping the final song, collaborating with songwriters and preparing for the Grand Final in May. The intensive process involves songwriting, music video production, and rehearsals leading up to the performance.
Despite the workload, artists involved in Eurovision are promised fair compensation and unparalleled exposure. Dettman highlighted the immense opportunity for artists to showcase their talent on a global scale, comparing the event’s reach to that of the Super Bowl halftime show.
