Stephen Eustaquio readily accepted the opportunity to join Swansea City after his recent success with Canada in the World Cup. The midfielder, fresh from helping Canada advance to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time, was attracted to the chance of assisting the Welsh club in their pursuit of a return to the Premier League and reuniting with coach Vitor Matos, who he knew from his time at Porto. Swansea City confirmed the signing of the 29-year-old from Porto on a two-year deal with the option for an additional season.
Eustaquio expressed his excitement about working with coach Matos again, stating it was an easy decision for him due to their previous collaboration. Swansea, who finished 11th in the Championship last season, are far from the promotion playoffs, but Eustaquio acknowledged the challenging road ahead in their bid for Premier League promotion.
The midfielder emphasized his aspiration of helping a prominent club like Swansea reach the top tier league, acknowledging the difficulty while remaining optimistic about the potential for a remarkable season. Eustaquio, born in Leamington, Ontario, to Portuguese parents, moved to Portugal as a child. Before his time at Porto, he played for Chaves in Portugal and Cruz Azul in Mexico, amassing over 150 appearances during his four-and-a-half years at Porto. Earlier this year, he had a brief loan spell at Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer.
With 61 caps for Canada, Eustaquio has represented his country in the last two World Cups. His standout moment in the recent tournament was scoring the decisive goal in Canada’s 1-0 win over South Africa in the Round of 32. Eustaquio, who wore the captain’s armband in Alphonso Davies’ absence due to injury, reflected on the joy of the team’s success and his personal contributions during the tournament.
Eustaquio is set to wear the number 46 jersey for Swansea and may make his debut in the upcoming match against Derby County this weekend.
