In Coleville, Saskatchewan, Dean Roberts observed a large grey drone flying above his expansive 4,000-hectare farm that cultivates various crops like canola, wheat, barley, and lentils. The drone, known as DJI T100, is currently the largest spray drone in Canada with a 100-liter tank approved by the federal government for pesticide spraying. During a demonstration, the drone was filled with water as it navigated the fields. Roberts highlighted how this technology could enhance their farm operations, especially in managing leaf disease pressure on crops like lentils during wet conditions that hinder ground rig operations.
Roberts emphasized that Prairie farmers like him have continuously embraced technological advancements to improve crop yields, with the drone being the latest progression. However, he noted that Canada lags behind countries like the U.S., China, Brazil, Japan, and Australia in permitting drone spraying due to regulatory delays. Experts attribute Canada’s slower growth in agri-food exports to factors such as bureaucratic hurdles, inadequate infrastructure, and labor shortages.
According to Evan Fraser from the University of Guelph’s Arrell Food Institute, Canada’s food trade growth has not kept pace with global trends, resulting in a decline in market share and ranking on the global food export leaderboard. While food exports have quadrupled since 2000, the rest of the world has seen a five-fold increase. Fraser stressed the need for regulatory improvements to facilitate the adoption of new technologies in agriculture.
Roberts and Evan Shout, CEO of Maverick Ag, highlighted challenges in transporting crops to global markets due to railway delays and labor scarcity during critical farming seasons. They emphasized the necessity for skilled workers to operate complex farming equipment efficiently. Shout underscored the importance of farmer involvement in decision-making processes to address infrastructure concerns and enhance Canada’s food security.
Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald affirmed the government’s commitment to overcoming barriers hindering agri-food exports through investment in critical infrastructure projects. The national food security strategy aims to reduce red tape, bolster domestic food production, and enhance export capacity. Jennifer Clapp from the University of Waterloo emphasized the need for Canada to transform into a sustainable agricultural leader, focusing on eco-friendly farming practices and global food security.
Fraser suggested that Canada should prepare to become a significant agricultural power in response to climate change, which may boost productivity in Canada while affecting output in equatorial regions. Roberts expressed confidence in Canada’s potential to contribute significantly to global food production, leveraging its vast arable land and favorable farming conditions.
