Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh had contrasting performances at the Pan Pacific championships in Irvine, California. Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100-meter butterfly and later contributed to the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, earning bronze. These medals marked her fourth and fifth wins at the competition. Ruck achieved a personal best time of 56.71 seconds in the 100m butterfly, coming in second behind American swimmer Gretchen Walsh. Australian competitor Alexandria Perkins claimed the bronze with a time of 56.75 seconds.
Reflecting on her success, Ruck expressed, “This [the women’s 100m butterfly] was a lot of fun. I feel like I got good rest between prelims and finals, and did all the things just to try and feel relaxed, and just trust my body was going to do what it did.” Her impressive performances included a bronze in the 100m backstroke and participation in the women’s 4x100m medley relay team.
In contrast, McIntosh faced disappointment after failing to qualify for the A final in the women’s 400m freestyle event despite winning the B final. The 19-year-old acknowledged her error, stating, “I was very mad at myself and I take full responsibility for missing that A final.” McIntosh vowed to learn from the experience and improve her performance. She will compete in the 200m IM event, where she holds the world record and is both the Olympic and world champion.
On the men’s side, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk achieved podium finishes in the men’s 200m backstroke, securing silver and bronze, respectively. Tierney expressed his excitement about both of them being on the podium, emphasizing the significance of their accomplishment. Yumeki Kojima of Japan clinched the gold medal in the event.
Ruck continued her success by guiding Canada to a bronze in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay event. The U.S. claimed gold in the relay, while Australia secured silver. Unfortunately, the Canadian men’s 4x100m freestyle team narrowly missed a podium finish, landing in fourth place behind the U.S., Australia, and Japan.
